Deputy Director

Summary of Position
The Deputy Director works closely with the Executive Director to oversee Development, Outreach and Marketing, and Business Operations of the Montezuma Land Conservancy.  This position will have supervisory responsibility for the Administrative Assistant.  Additionally the Deputy Director will be part of the staff team responsible for the success of the organization’s land protection program.  This is an approximately 15-month term position.  MLC anticipates hiring an Executive Director in December of 2009.  A successful Deputy Director will be encouraged to apply for this position.

DUTIES

Development (At least 50% of this position will be focused on developing the annual fund)

  • Develops and implements multi-year fundraising plan to ensure financial viability of the Conservancy.
  • Oversees and conducts major donor development and giving.  Builds and maintains personal relationships with donors. 
  • Develops operating endowment and planned giving program for the Conservancy.
  • Directs and oversees all annual fundraising activities, including: individual giving, membership, grants, and events.  Works closely with staff on conservation finance.
  • Works closely with Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee in the implementation of the above.

Business Operations

  • Assists Executive Director with financial management and accounting for the Conservancy.  Prepares financial reports for all aspects of the organization.  Works with Executive Director on budget preparation.
  • Manages corporate and financial record-keeping; maintains corporate files including 501(c)(3) requirements.
  • Assists Executive Director with policy research and development.

Outreach and Marketing

  • Maintains and develops relations with community stakeholders (media, donors, elected officials, community leaders, landowners, business owners, agency and industry representatives, etc.  Represents Conservancy in a professional manner.
  • Supervises Operations Manager in the development of marketing and communications plan and materials including newsletter, website, brochures, annual report and other necessary collaterals.
  • Works closely with Executive Director and Board on board development. 
  • Provides support to the Board of Directors as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for land conservation and an appreciation for and understanding of the role people play in private land stewardship and conservation.
  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to natural resource conservation or non-profit or business administration. 
  • Proven fundraising experience.
  • At least 2-4 years experience in land conservation and/or land trust experience preferred—financial management a plus.  Experience in rural communities a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; effective and inspiring public speaker; ability to represent the Conservancy in a professional manner.
  • Ability to interact well with a wide variety of people including staff, board members, landowners, officials, media, scientists, donors, and a diverse Board of Directors
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple projects.
  • Works well independently and in a team setting
